The Greek philosopher knew what he was talking about. In the last 2 months, the world has seen some of the biggest changes in the last 70+ years. The word unprecedented is now a daily occurrence.
But in and amongst all this, there’s solidarity, ingenuity and change happening. In and amongst all the bad, there’s good happening. And in today’s episode, I want us all to focus on change and evolution.
There’s so much uncertainty, for everyone right now, and no one is facing this struggle alone. We’re all very much in this together. But right now, our businesses are facing challenges, our suppliers and our customers are also facing challenges.
So what can we do to help us adapt to this “new normal” way of life?

Hi, everybody. Welcome to a brand new episode of The all about digital marketing podcast. I’m Chris Bruno, I’m your host, and I’m also the co founder of social Inc, a digital marketing agency that’s been around since 2008. Today, I wanted to address the elephant in the room. We’ve all been sort of tiptoeing around it or they’ve been using it to try and give her an excuse to email us and tell us that they’re thinking about us and our safety. Covered 19 coronavirus has more than done its part in terms of shaking things up in the global economy. The world that we’re living in right now doesn’t feel or look the same as it did just only a few months ago. I’m not going to pretend to be a doctor. I’m not going to even talk about the virus in any way, shape or form. What I did want to talk to you guys about today though, and something that I think is really important is change.
Now the reason I bring this up on a digital marketing podcast is because things are going to change for so many of us, for so many of our businesses for how we do business, and general for our clients just as much, or for our own businesses, things are not going to be the same. As the majority of Europe goes on to lockdown. As things look like they’re as bad as they can get as we’re told we have to stay indoors and stay on our sofas and watch Netflix. The reality is there’s a lot of people out there that are doing their best to try and help this situation. But for us, as marketers, as small business owners as freelancers as solopreneurs, or entrepreneurs, whatever we want to call ourselves. There’s one thing that’s clear to all of us, I think we’re not going to be doing business as usual for some time. Things are different right now.
I wanted to start the episode by talking about well actually, it’s a Quote from her record her reckless, I think I’m pronouncing that right. A Greek philosopher who said the only constant in life is change. Now change is something that a lot of people feel scared of or afraid of, or they think is a sign of weakness. I wanted to talk about that today because it really couldn’t be any further from the truth. Change is a huge sign of strength. If you have the strength to admit that you were wrong to change your opinion on something because you’ve understood it better or because you’ve learnt something new. That is a huge asset to you and to your business, and it will help you in every aspect of life.
When it comes to our businesses right now, though, things are going to have to change. shops are now shot. People are only allowed out of their houses for very specific reasons, whether it be health care or primary essential goods only. This means that it’s no longer a time whereby we can sit back and let The business run itself or let the business work in a way that it has done or how it always has, from my side, something that was really important to us as a business, we decided to contact all our clients to let them know that nothing else mattered right now other than them and how they were doing.
What we did is we said to them, the billing periods would be paused if they had issues or financial problems because of what was happening. We said that we would offer them support as much as we could, to help them figure out what this change what this new normal would look like for them and for their business. But more importantly, what it would look like for their clients. When things get hard, we often go into panic mode. What happens is invariably, we start to email people as quickly and as frantically as we can to try and see if there’s any possibility of finding work here or there. Or we slashed prices. And because we’re desperate to try and get something in to make sure that we’re okay We forget that actually everybody else in a situation like this is in the same boat.
Right now isn’t the time to be doing crazy offers and giving buy one get one free or anything else. But it is definitely a time to really take stock of what’s important for not just yourself and your business, but actually for your clients. You see, if you’re feeling a little bit afraid or a little bit worried or you’re thinking, What’s going to happen next, imagine how your clients are feeling in the same light. So many people right now face uncertainty, so many people are unsure. And that’s normal. We’re all in this together, right?
Not one of us has to go out this alone, not one of us has to try and figure this all out for ourselves. Not one of us has to suddenly make this miraculous jump and suddenly transform and take advantage or capitalise on this terrible situation that we’re currently going through. What we can do though, is take the time to really change About our clients, we can take the time to build better relationships, relationships that are built on real understanding and listening. If we take this opportunity to really take a deep, deep look at who we are at what we do, and our clients and what they need more than anything else, we can start to find ways in which we can help them support them. And ultimately, make sure that more of us come out on the other side of this. And we survive it so that we can actually all do more business together in the future.
If you’re thinking about short term gains right now, or short term profits and trying to figure out ways to make money, I think you might be missing the bigger picture. And especially when it comes to your marketing online. There are some businesses that are going to be able to continue that are going to be working ecommerce delivery, whatever it might be. And I think that’s going to be hugely necessary. But if right now your idea is I could up my prices twice today. three eggs. Because of the situation that we currently find ourselves in, you’re thinking short term wins, and you’re thinking selfishly, rather than looking at what the huge possibilities away if we can all help each other and we can all be there to support each other.
Now, if your business is struggling because of this situation, now is the time to bend your original plans to say it’s okay to put things on hold to revisit your launch strategy, or your sales plan or your marketing plan or even your content calendar no matter what it is that you had planned. Don’t think that because you’ve done that work, and because it’s already there, that you should just carry on business as usual, and keep pushing stuff out for the sake of it. Now’s the time to revisit everything that you’re currently doing. Now’s the time to really take stock and to start asking other people, your clients, your suppliers, what it is that you can help them with how it is that you can evolve your business and that That’s exactly what the sort of hard pressure driven times are about evolution, that change from easy what we’ve always done, how it’s always worked into what it is that it’s going to be that the new world, the new normal requires, in potentially just a few months time.
People are going to remember the brands that helped them help them that helps support their friends, their family, their business, the chances are, they’re also going to remember the brands that took advantage that increased prices that kept them held into contracts, which may or may not put them into financial difficulties.
Right now, if your business is staying business as usual, I think you really need to take a look at this unless you’re a supermarket. Of course. If you’re a supermarket or a pharmacy, you’re doing everything you can to try and help with the situation that’s currently facing all of us. But if you’re a business that offers personal or professional services to other people. We’re all in this together. I can’t stress this enough. We’re all in the same boat. As one person doesn’t have any clients, they’re unable to pay their suppliers. Those people are unable to pay their suppliers. And if they don’t have customers, the whole cycle breaks down. So what can we be doing right now to help other people what can we be doing right now to support other people? For us and from our side. What we’re trying to do is make sure that every single one of our clients and anybody else who feels that they need it has an opportunity to talk whether it be a sounding board for ideas, whether it be because they’re having a bad day.
There is nothing more important to me right now personally, and as well to my team here at social Inc and on the all about digital marketing podcast. Then helping to support people right now that are scared that are worried that are trying To make those hard decisions about their business, there are always opportunities in moments like this. There’s opportunities to take time to reflect introspection to understand what it is that you’re doing, and if you’re happy and how you’re doing these things, but right now more than anything, I just want to repeat my message. And I want to make sure that you guys know it as well. There is nothing wrong with looking at your business and making big decisions, big changes right now to support and help other people.
We’re all in this together. No one needs to go out this alone. And if you’re struggling, and if you are on your own, having a bad time, having a bad day, not sure where that next paycheck is gonna come from. Then again, you’re not in that alone either. We’re all in the same boat. Everybody is in the same boat across the world. People are in the same boat from multibillion pound companies through to the smallest of freelancers have just set up It doesn’t matter who you are, we’re all in this together.
